Getting around it by calling yourself a painter (What, you paint houses?) or an illustrator (a bored person in a suit stuck in front of an AutoCAD program waiting for 5pm to roll around?) is an option, but why do people feel that 'artist' is too fluffy? Is it mainstream media stereotyping? Artists are often portrayed as charlatans or 'dossers'. And what criteria make using the term reflexively acceptable? Loads of shows on your CV?
